(New York) -- SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company, Inc. proudly announces that its Puerto Rico office Business Development Manager, Niurka Y. Vélez, has been honored with the Puerto Rico Association of Insurance Women's (PRAIW) Insurance Woman of the Year Award. The award was presented at the PRAIW's 28th Annual Assembly meeting held last month in Puerto Rico.
Ms. Vélez, who was PRAIW president last year, explained that the award recognizes service in three areas: to the association, the insurance industry and the community as a whole. She has been a PRAIW member since 1994 and has held other posts as chair of the Life and Health International Committee at the association's national level. The PRAIW belongs to the National Association of Insurance Women.

As SBLI USA's Business Development Manager for Puerto Rico, Ms. Vélez is in charge of researching the local market and generating new group insurance clients. She joined SBLI USA several months ago, after two years as vice president at the Cooperativa de Seguros de Vida (COSVI) Sales Department, where she was responsible for nearly 200 employees and a budget of $25 million overseeing seven different insurance lines.
Prior to working at COSVI, she was president at Oquendo-Vélez & Asociados, a San Juan insurance agency and served as executive director and president of PRAIFA, the Puerto Rico Association of Life Underwriters.
Ms. Vélez was president of the Puerto Rico Association of Insurance Women in 2006 and obtained a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Buffalo University. She holds various advanced certifications in insurance and related fields, including Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), Certified Professional Insurance Woman (CPIW) and Diversified Advanced Education (DAE).
