Michael Akker is executive vice president and chief operating officer of SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company, Inc and S.USA Life Insurance Company, Inc. Akker maintains the company's strategic and operating plans, ensures compliance with investment guidelines for individual money managers, and establishes the company's investment policy which includes asset allocation, sector selection, and duration management. He is also responsible for technology, operations, legal and compliance, and facilities.
Akker has contributed significantly to the Company's successful investment income, maintaining the capital and investment posture. He and his team utilize an intelligent business eco-system creating a network of partnerships to maximize SBLI USA's investment potential; managing an investment portfolio of approximately $1.5 billion and generating annual revenues of over $85 million.
Akker joined SBLI USA in 2001, serving as the company's vice president and chief internal auditor, until being appointed vice president and treasurer in 2003, and then senior vice president, strategic planning and investments. At his current post, to which he was appointed in December of 2007, he plays a key role in establishing SBLI USA's long-term strategy by analyzing the competitive landscape, understanding the financial needs of the target market and keeping abreast of new developments in the financial services sector.
Prior to joining SBLI USA, Akker held senior posts in audit and risk management at several Fortune 500 financial services corporations.
Akker holds a master's degree in business administration from St. John's University and a bachelor of science degree from Queens College, City University of New York. He is a certified fraud examiner, financial services auditor and risk professional.
