|  |  |  | Deborah Aguiar-Vélez is the founder, president, and chief executive officer of Sistemas Corporation, a 25 year-old computer consulting and training firm specializing in engineering and financial applications. In 1996, Aguiar-Vélez created a division to train and offer technical support to local government, businesses and not-for-profit organizations. She has also developed and led workshops on computer security, ethics and repetitive strain injuries.
An accomplished engineer and businesswoman, Aguiar-Vélez is nationally recognized for her innovative leadership in the areas of entrepreneurship, technical development of support systems, and for her public service. From 1988-1990, she directed the Division of Small Business and Women and Minority Business for the New Jersey Department of Commerce and Economic Development. Before founding her company, she was a senior analyst for the Exxon Corporation.
Aguiar-Vélez has spent over 30 years working as an adjunct instructor at a number of colleges and universities. She has taught computer languages at the University of Puerto Rico, and has been a frequent guest speaker at academic institutions including Princeton University, Smith College, Penn State, and Harvard University. In addition, she has served on the boards of The Franklin Institute of Philadelphia, and CoreStates New Jersey National Bank. Aguiar-Vélez has been honored by: Hispanic Magazine; the National Council of Christians and Jews; and Minorities and Women in Business magazine.
Aguiar-Vélez earned her bachelor's degree with honors in chemical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, and has attended several executive education programs at Dartmouth College.
